Microbial Ecology, Metagenomics, and Bioinformatics

about-me

I am a research scientist in the lab of Adam Arkin. I am funded by the ENIGMA Science Focus Area through the U.S. Department of Energy. I also have a Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) project to study the microbiome of the San Francisco Estuary using long read metagenomics.

My projects are concerned with

  • Metagenomics of environmental microbiomes using long read sequencing
  • Dissecting the ecological and genetic factors of microbial interactions
  • Ecogenomics of sediment and water microbes

What are the ecological and genetic factors that are responsible for microbial community formation?

I use high-throughput sequencing and cultivation methods to understand how the environment and species interactions affect the structure of microbial communities. I use bioinformatics to mine the sequence data and to develop a predictive understanding of species interactions based on genome content.
